How to Reward Great Staff Without Just Paying More
Purpose · Cold open. No housekeeping. Name the thing happening right now.
- ›Put the slide up. Pause one beat before speaking.
- ›You've got somebody who's really good. Reliable, doesn't complain, solves problems. So they get the difficult student, they cover the call-out, they train the new person, they get the project nobody else can handle.
- ›Meanwhile the mediocre employee gets left alone, because we don't trust them with more.
- ›So the reward for being excellent is more work. Same schedule, same everything else, just more. I call this The Great Employee Tax.
- ›Land it: let it go long enough and your best people learn, being great here just gets me a bigger pile.
